Well, they probably just subbed to ask you this and to get you to sub back and aren't going to actually watch your videos so checking them out is a waste of time...
 
It's annoying but I can see where the people are coming from when they post on big channels and such. I did it once too, though it didn't work out for me lol. I think starting a channel is just frustrating, especially nowadays, so everyone just wants that one burst of initial exposure. I say whatever people can do for publicity though is a good thing. Whether it's good or bad is up to them though.
 
Basically any form of promotion that isn't on forums or social networks.
Commenting or messaging "Check out my channel!" on popular videos or to people, begging people who watch your videos to like and share, misleading titles and thumbnails (*cough* Shane Dawson *cough*), spamming video responses (I'll admit, I used to do this with my old channel, but I have since learned that that is a crappy thing to do. Please forgive me for my sins.)
 
Sub4subbers. Hate them, they are the scum of Youtube. they should FOAD.

Guys and girls using physical features for attention. Grow a spine and stop using sex appeal to get subs and views.

Totally random contact requests from channels whose content I wouldn't give a damn about. Like I would really care about hip hop or pop musicians when my main music I enjoy is heavy metal.

Misleading thumbnails, this also chaps my a** because a few huge Youtubers use it to garner attention. It's a dumb tactic and should be frowned upon more by the community.

And worst of all, Youtube themselves promoting their 5+ million sub channels on every goddamn channel page under "Popular channels on Youtube". No, YT I don't give two s***s about RWJ, nigahiga or Smosh at all. Take your money makers elsewhere, thank you.
 
I just gained 150 subs from one of the methods people were saying that it's annoying here . I post comments on big channels asking people to check out my video, but first, I post something relevant to the video that adds value to my comment instead of just asking people to directly check it out. Check this screenshot:

Yea. I'll have to say people that post on videos just to promote their channel without even commenting on the video itself or even being a fan or sub if the channel.

Yeah, I've seen one of your comments on a different video just yesterday. BUT, you are not using "the methods people were saying that it's annoying here", because you "post something relevant to the video that adds value to my comment instead of just asking people to directly check it out", and doesn't only add value to your comment, but to the whole conversation. The annoying part of the annoying ones is that they don't add to the conversation. It also helps that you are making really good videos. Those comments still have a bit of potential to backfire, cause there are folks who jump on anything that is promoting, but them is just crazy hardliners.

So while I agree with what people have said here, what you do gets my stamp of approval.

Commenting on other popular YouTube channel's to gain more subscribers and views does not even work most of the time.
If it does work it probably won't even gain you any more subscribers, but it may gain you some views and that is better than nothing!;)
