Monetizing long videos

Hello everyone! I see quite a few very popular long videos that are very popular. Do you think strategy for monetizing long videos (30 minutes ... 1 hour 30 minutes) is different than for short videos?

I thought one should let ads display on CPM basis for long videos but @Tarmack has kindly explained that content creators have no impact on whether they display ads on CPM or CPC basis...

The Google display network decide what ads to show currently, publishers have no bearing on it.

If it was my channel/video I would break the video down into ~10 min sections and make a playlists. It allows for additional add exposures and sponsorship opportunities.

Yes, its different for monetizing short videos and long videos. Long video is considered to be at least 30 minutes or above. When you have a video of this length you can put multiple monetization time stamps - this means that several ads will appear during your video not one - generating more revenue for you (considering video is being watched at those times when ads spawn).

Thanks, could you show a screenshot on how to assign timestamps for ads? Or maybe you could give me a link with more information?

If Gamers and I are thinking of the same thing (I believe we are, correct me I'm wrong GamersName) you need to fully upload the video, go to video editing (like, creator studio > video manager > edit option), the Monetizing tab, then there should be another option below "in stream ads" (or whatever it's called. Haven't looked in a while.)
Attached a picture. Though, the video is only 12 minutes long. It does have 1k views though, so maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing...

Its in monetization tab that is accessed via edit button of the video like CommMatt said. Mark one of the in stream ads option, then new 3-4 options appears. Put a check on "Mid-roll ads at:" and simply write times when you want those extra adds to appear, let'say video is 1h 30mins long so you write in like 00:30,01:00,01:15 (no spaces or spaces does not matter between times, just put a ",") this way 3 extra adds will appear during your video.

I have seen some television programs and video games where the content creator gives permissions for mid-rolls every 7 minutes. I can't imagine that they are getting as many ads or as much revenue as it appears. I would also imagine that their audience retention might be terrible. Finally, I suspect that a lot of those views are from families watching that content on TV devices/apps which don't show ads.

Do I use midrolls? Yes. But they are planned with the presentation and not just plopped in at some random point.

7 minutes are way to often for another add to appear. I try to keep at least 40 minutes in between.

Thanks @GamersName @ComMatt ! Your explanations make sense, this answers my question! :)

It says in Google Specifications that InStream ads are shown on my mobile, and I also just checked this. So I guess unless a family uses AdBlock they will see the ads

Good point! Just read a comment from an angry user about a herpes commercial under the kids' video...Would you mind sharing how you manage to plan the ad with presentation?
