Mirror shot - Is this done how I think it's done?

I need to stop caring too much.

In this video, there's a mirror shot that doesn't show the camera. I'm thinking of making a first person pov video that would include a shot like that. I'm wondering how could I do it so that the camera wouldn't show in the mirror?
My idea on how I could do this: at first film the actor actually looking into the camera as a separate video clip. Then film the mirror as another video clip. And finally put those clips into one video, making the first clip's window smaller (much like the in-video annotation that shows footage from another video) and place it onto where the mirror's supposed to be. Would that work?
 
most people actually angle the camera so its reflection doesn't come up..for example placing it in the corner :)

I know about that but that's not really first person, is it? I was thinking of a shot where the actor looks at their hands and then into the mirror. If I wanted to do it your way, I would have to somehow place the camera right behind the actor (although I don't know how it'd be possible for the camera not to show then) and zoom in over their sholder to get a shot of them looking straight into the mirror at their own face. This sounds complicated but I hope you understood what I meant.
 
That's exactly what they did. If you look closely at the mirror, it's obvious it's another video on top of the POV video.

Then the mistery is solved! Yay I finally understood how to do that :D I remember watching that video some time ago and wondering how's that even possible haha.
 
Ah they beat me to it.

You will need to motion-track your mirror and place another video on top of it indeed. :)

Haha yeah at first it does look pretty believable, but if you really look at it, you can tell what they did.

  • The mirror is too zoomed in. If it was just a bit zoomed out, it would make it look more real.
  • When he's holding the flashlight, it only appears in the mirror. It should still be visible through his line of sight.
  • When he begins to lean forward towards the mirror, the POV moves before the mirror does.
