Mid-Roll Ad -- Extremely Long 40+ minutes!?

Has anyone ran into the mid-roll ads on their videos are extremely long. I've seen a few Splattercat Gaming and a couple others that was 40+ minutes...basically he put an entire Let's Play episode up as an ad. I'm not too sure about how mid-roll ads technically work as far as paying out. I thought the whole ad had to be watched or clicked on to payout.

If this is true, then absurdly long ads basically ensure you'll almost never have a payout due to a watch-through...more than likely they'll just get annoyed and "skip" (zero benefit) or leave my channel thinking I am cool with 40 minute "ads". I'm sure I'm not fully understanding how it works, hence this thread. If someone could clarify this for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I've seen ads that last for 15 minutes but 40 minutes long I haven't encountered yet. Wonder who decides that this can be an "ad" anyway?

If I'm not mistaken you don't choose what ads are on the video.

Ok I understand that but these people who confirm these kinda videos as ads must be high or something. Who is going to watch a 40 minute ad for maybe a 10 minute video or smth?

Mid-roll ads are only available on 30 minute or longer videos. I get to decide whether or not to have mid-roll ads. Then I get to decide how often they play (they must be at least 7 mins apart though) and at what specific time. But as for which ad I'll get, it's a roll of the dice...I don't get to choose the specific ads. Some are sensible, like 2-4 minutes. Some are just rediculous, 15-40+ mins.

I have no idea why an ad of that length would be considered okay by YouTube. It's just obnoxious as far as I can tell. I totally lose out on the chance that someone settled in will just let is play through completely, which is the main draw and reason for the success of the mid-roll ad type to begin with.

Thanks for the quick replies. Hopefully someone can clarify this still. It seems like I'm seeing it almost 1 out of 5 times the mid-rolls run.

Even in my 15 or 20+ minutes video's i don't use mid rolls. I think it will p**s of the viewer, leaving the video and never comeback.

I have seen one that was 30 minutes long hehe. Yeah I agree, way too long. But like others said....you don't choose the ads hehe.

I'm pretty tired and got confused with the replies. Are you guys referring to the ad itself? I don't know but I'm pretty most YouTubers check the "30 secs limit" for ads on their videos.

Trueview mid-rolls and pre-rolls payout whether the ad has been skipped or not :)

This ad you saw was likely part of YouTube's partner promotion feature rather than an actual advertising campaign, it is fairly unusual that you would see something like this as quite frankly it will get the channel trying to advertise a whole lot less retention/ growth/ results by it being a full episode rather than a trailer for the channel/ series.
