Microphone for DSLR

I personally use the Audio Technica ATR 3350. It is inexpensive, and because it's a lapel mic, you can move around without having to worry about change in sound quality. The Rode Videomic is really great, but more expensive, so it depends on how much you're willing to spend to do a vlog on YouTube. My advice is to just use a lapel mic. You won't have to worry about the cam being fixed in one place, and you can put an extension on it as well if you need to move further away from the camera at times, and you won't need a second person to operate a boom mic if you need to move around.

Exactly what I use.

I have a Nikon Me-1 which will also connect to a canon .. it's stereo, has a additional low-cut filter switch and it's only $125 .. great for if you want a mic that can be simply attached to the hot shoe mount.

Rode mics are the way to go unless you're willing to record your audio separately. DSLR's aren't very good when it comes to recording through the camera. Like...not at all. Personally, I record everything on a Zoom H4N and sync it up later. Yes, it's annoying, but the audio is a thousand times better.

It all depends on what type of shoot you are going for. Lav mic for sit down and talk, hand held for interviews, shotgun mics for on the fly shooting and for the love of God don't use the on camera mic xD. Shotgun is probably the easiest but won't get you the best quality unless you go really expensive.

If you don't mind extra work you can get a nice zoom mic and use that to record and sync them up in post. It will give you a lot more crisp sound.
