Masking technique in premiere pro cs6?

I would love to use AE more but with hte way it runs for me I try to avoid it as much as possible. I like being able to see the changes I make straight away. Maybe if I add more RAM in the future I can play around a lot more. For a review I might use it, but for daily videos I need to use Premiere to the best of it's ability.
