Looking for PC recommendations for editing HD video...

Taking over the world... ...one kid at a time!
I will likely be in the market for a new PC this year, but I know very little about computers and usually end up buying the most computer power I can get at the price I can afford. What's out there in the under $1500 range that's good for editing HD video? I currently use PowerDirector but may get a more professional editing program like Sony Vegas or Adobe After Effects. Thanks in advance!

What in particular are you planning to do with After Effects? Are you wanting to get into visual effects, or perhaps animations and typography and such? If so, you'll want to invest not only in a solid CPU, but an abundance of RAM as well.

Keep in mind that AE is meant for visual editing, and should not be used to do standard cuts and edits to your video. You would use programs like Vegas or Premiere Pro etc for that. So if you're not interested in visual effects, then most standard editing programs should suffice - and I'd opt for a better CPU over extra ram. But either way, $1500 should be more than enough for a powerful tower.

Appreciate the feedback, guys. I would be doing some minor visual effects, mostly to do better chroma keying than what I've been able to do using PowerDirector. Power Director has some basic particle effect but it doesn't have much in way of plug-ins for effects like earthquake cracks, explosions, etc. I am also interested in exploring animation and 3-D titles more deeply.

Thanks! I am a little clueless about anything higher than consumer-grade software, so I appreciate the information.

By the way, "Thunder God" looks awesome! What effects program did you use for that?
Thanks! Premiere Pro to just cut and edit the sequences, but After Effects for the fake rain/weather/glass door/smoothing/special things that I won't say due to spoilers haha. It was a labour of love.
