Liking comments raises engagement number?

Gaijillionaire

I've got a yen for being in Japan!
simple question. Does the number of likes on a comment increase the engagement rate? Or does it not really do anything?

This question was asked during the Hangouts session with the Yt brand manager. It doesn't do anything algorithmically. Likes, comments, shares, they are to increase engagement for subscribers and viewers, make them feel a part of the channel. They have little to zero algorithmic weight (as stated by the brand manager).

It makes sense, it's just there to make the viewers feel more a part of the community, getting responses from the creators, having their comments upvoted by the community and such. If the number of likes and comments and shares boosted your place in the system then the little guys would have zero chance at anything happening.

Most of the things discussed don't matter algorithmically. The only things that matter are watch time (video, channel, session), retention, and start and stop a session for a viewer.
The most important thing to get viewers to click on a video is the thumbnail.
That's all we have to play with.

Good summary, those are the key points to focus on indeed according to the two brand managers I spoke to last week as well (YT creator day).
The summarized answer on how to grow was answered by looking at what the big guys do in the area you want to be active in, do something similar and try to give your own twist to it.

Hmm, what do you mean by session and channel retention? Basically just how long they watch your video for, and if they clicked it in the first place?

I think yeap it does.Cause people more attract towards a comment that has more likes & I think that's same about YouTube videos :)
Your point doesn't make any sense. On search and suggested you'll not see any indication of likes/dislikes or the amount of comments until you already started the video... I never bother to check any of it as it's usually a spam fest on every single video anyways.
