Actually, this probably won't settle anything, lol. I'm just curious what the results will be.

For gaming channels, do you think it's better to A) do what's popular at the time, even though bigger youtubers are probably doing it too and they will probably overshadow you, or B) do something that's not done as much, even if it means what you're doing isn't very popular (i.e., because many fewer people are probably actively looking for it)?

I doubt there's really an easy answer, but if you had to pick one...?

You obviously want to do something unique, but it doesn't have to be totally new niche. For example I do a lot of minecraft videos (extremely overdone!) but I use mods that are not so popular and I grow my audience that way. It has been working for me so far :)

While you're starting to things that bigger youtubers are doing, more people are searching for it that way.

There was no BOTH option, why stick to only one side when you can cater too many crowds.

I voted for unique though since most trends suck.

Well, I know it's not a black or white kind of issue. I just wanted to force people to pick one or the other just for the sake of the poll (otherwise almost everyone would just pick "both"), and I figured people who think it's something like both or neither would explain in a reply.

I say do something you love. Whether it's unique or not. If you love Minecraft, hey, that's awesome. You'll be putting yourself into a majorly oversaturated area, but you'll enjoy what you're doing. That's what's most important in the end.

Luckily I did explain :P But yeah point taken.

While it may be beneficial to do the popular thing of the moment, long term, people should be attracted to YOU.
