I can't say you're right. If what you were saying is true, then you'd be breaking the law to just share a song with your friend.I'm pretty sure they do have the right to request a strike on your channel if they choose. It would be YouTube who would make the final decision but who are they going to side with, a publisher who doesnt have permission to use the track or the copyright holder who can hold the publisher as liable for breaching copyright law ?
You can read about it on the google help section, I can post links but google "youtube copyright strike" it was the top result for me. It says nothing about the requirement for you to have ads on your video to receive a strike.
