Is this a strategy?

I've noticed recently more and more people not letting the public see their sub or viewer counts. Do you find this a good strategy for new channels (I'm assuming maybe they don't want to be prejudged by low counts? Why not show your numbers?

I don't really consider it a good strategy; for one might consider it sub-botting and hiding the results, and otherwise will just think you're ashamed of your beginning on the platform.
Least that's me personally. I got nothing to hide, I got 1 digit subs, which will grow to 2 digit and 3 digit and 5 and 6 and so on, but at the end of the day we all start at 0.

That's what I keep thinking. I like watching the channels I sub to grow.

I don't think you can call this a strategy. I belive this is a matter of personal thinking
Yeah i don't believe that too. Of course we need to show our subscribers to convince others to sub our channel. But at the end of the day, everyone have their own opinion :)

YouTube advice columns say it is a bad choice because viewers like transparency and YouTubers who are open and not looking like they are hiding something.

comes off a little bit sketchy to me honestly, but it's definitely a personal choice at the end of the day. i definitely think that people pre-judge when they see a low sub count but we all start at 0, why bother hiding it?

It would put me off slightly if I saw a hidden subscriber count tbh, which is weird because a channel with 0 subscribers wouldn't put me off at all - I'd be excited to check a new or smaller channel out
