I'm looking for something that allows you to select a person in a video and cut them out of the background similar to how you would in photoshop or gimp with a picture. Anyone know of anything like that?
I don't think you can do anything like that without a green screen. You have to remember pictures and video are two completely different medias. What you're referring to would be a mask but a mask would take a lot of time and patience if you're dedicated enough.
The only thing I know of is the rotoscoping tool in After Effects (forget what version) if they still have it then the latest may have a better one. But it did what your asking, instead of rotoscoping manually like
The roto brush in after effects cs4 and above (I think) can make a good job at it but for how much time it takes it's worth your while just getting a green screen if its full length clips to key out
A Nice single coloured wall and sony video vegas does the job well, plenty of videos on you tube showing you, im not VIP so I cant link you to anything
I would suggest using After Effects (or preferably Nuke thouh it is very expensive) to construct a luma matte by altering the blending modes of the layers of you and then just the isolated background. You can then use the luma matte to pulle a rouhg key which can then be refined by choking/expanding the matte.
