Is promoting your channel in comments sketchy?

I've seen a lot less people promoting their channels in comment sections lately (past few months now actually) and I think it is because doing so is looking more and more like a desperate attempt to grow an audience. Those types of comments qualify as spam so I mark them for spam and move on. I don't like when people leave that commercial spam on other channels. It is self-promotion in the most shameless, desperate and unappealing way especially if you are one of those guys who thumbs up his own comments or uses bots to thumb them up. So I wouldn't recommend trying to grow that way.

For instance I remember there was a usual group of channels that used to spam the whole "Hey, I'm trying grow my audience. Please come to my channel blah blah blah..." last year in the comment section of Seananners and Woodysgamertag. I had reported their comments for spam (and likely other people had done so was well) so much that I guess they either gave up or had their channels deleted for spamming. Now I don't see those channels spamming their comments anymore. Goes to show that promotional comments like that don't work at least not anymore.

I think you might be holding back!

What do you mean? Do you mean as in other things people utilize to grow? Those are really the only things I dislike about what Channels do on YouTube. Instead of making unique, creative, entertaining and interesting content people would rather rely on bots, LikeFavSub giveaways, fake giveaways, miscategorizing, spamming, bumping, misleading titles and thumbnails, meta-tagging, Irrelevant tagging, spam tagging, tagging other youtubers, emulating others success, plagiarizing and other shady tactics to grow their channels. So aside from promotional channel spam those are the only things that really bother me about YouTube :p

I was just kidding! I hate it when my sense of humor doesn't translate to print. It's why I get in so much trouble over email and text. I just loved your rant! :)

I was actually going to reply to this my response was so long I created a new thread. It is called Don'ts of Self Promotion in Yt comments. You can find in the YouTube articles and tutorials thread. I really liked LJays rant. lol

regrettably, I've done it both ways. I've asked people to kindly check out my videos and I've also just tried posting funny comments. Both will get you some...subscribers. Spamming will get you a lot of dislikes and hate. I don't mind people spamming in my comment section. But I stopped doing it a long time ago. Now I just comment on videos so people know that I exist. :)

I really dislike when the channels say something a long the lines of, " so and so inspired to make videos/music" - no they didn't, you want to do it for the money, I can tell. After a while you see their comment on a different video saying the same thing, lol.

So true, I mean its okay if you comment that on a one youtubers channel, but I highly doubt that fifty youtubers inspired you.

why would spamming require balls lol i spam commenters on big channels 100 times a day lol gotta do what ya gotta do to get traffic at the start
