Something you could do for testing (this applies to anyone with a larger monitor and would like to see their background at various sizes) is install the web developer addon for firefox and resize your browsers width to the various common sizes using its Resize feature:

Or press CTRL while using the scroll wheel to zoom in

I cant recommend that lol, the amount of times I have seen people with their browsers zoomed in not realising they can reset the zoom

good luck and to answer your original question , a professional or atleast nice looking channel design boosts your channels appearance and style!
If you have good design on your channel then people will know your videos are quality too

backgrounds are always a good thing to have for your channel. they make your channel stand out and make more people interested in your channel. i am getting a new one soon because mine is old and low quality
