Is it really that bad to not have a niche?

So I'm new to youtube and keep hearing that a channel needs to be consistent. To pick a niche and only upload things that fit within it. The thing is, I want my channel to be a collection of everything "me". Is that a mistake? I feel like, if youtube is about building relationships with your audience, then showing big events from my life, things that I think are funny, my opinions on things, what I thought about the movies I've watched or whatever else I find interesting should help build a relationship with people. Plus it's how I enjoy using youtube. Should I stop and just focus on one thing?

A second question I have, is if this would be a good idea until I have sort of felt out youtube? Couldn't I throw everything at the wall like spaghetti and see what sticks then focus on it as I improve? Or possibly split the channel up down the road? Thanks guys, I'd really like to hear what your experience is and what you think.

If I watch a gaming channel, I don't want daily vlogs.

If I watch a makeup channel, I don't want funny skits.

You see what I mean?

Also, I don't think you should split it up "down the road." It will only cause your viewers to split up later on.

I think the best thing to do is start with the one thing you are most passionate about. And then once you get established you can ask your subs what else they would like to see? Or maybe make a 2nd channel for vlogs and things

I think you should do whatever videos you want other wise you won't have fun at all

Its only bad when you the uploader stops having fun, screw anyone who thinks you "have" to be something else.

I mean basically, it's your YouTube channel, do whatever you want to do. MsFancyBear does have a point though if you're wanting to become like a famous YouTuber with lots of subscribers, some are gonna get turned off if you go too crazy with your video switching.

I started off as a topic channel, went to vlogs, went to sketches, went to convention/event coverage and then to cosplay stuff and interviews.

Lost about 2 subs along the way lol. I think if your audience is there for you, they will be interested and stick around. They will be choosy about what videos they are more interested in, but as long as the uploads keep coming, I don't see it being a problem.
