Is it just me, or...

... are there a LOT of YouTube channels that only do video games now? I was in the SocialBlade chat room the other day and everyone there kept asking me to check out their channel. When I did, it was ALL video games. Seriously? Does no one vlog anymore, or do sketch comedy, or just rants? I would even settle for a makeup tutorial or something. Is this the future of YouTube? Minecraft?

Well, video games are something everyone loves (to an extent) and to a lot of people, they think it'll get them famous fairly quickly. Especially if they can capture footage in HD. But, there are a lot of factors that go into it.

I personally love watching other people play video games, other times people want to be mindful of their purchase and so they rely on people who do. Though I do agree, a lot of people do it and it makes it either harder or near impossible to stand out.

Machinima also makes it tempting to people.

I can't stand watching my fiancee play video games, so I have no interest in watching other people play them online. Maybe if everyone was doing something different, but most channels are minecraft, COD or BattleField. How about something different, guys?

Yeah, I agree. Or the trick tags where people lure you in with a title or tag that has nothing to do with what their video is about.

But thats the popular culture, I'm assuming people think; "play video games, get famous."

There is a growing number of channels that play the games, but many stick around and watch to get to know the people behind it. Good examples of this would be most of the Yogscast, Nanners and CaptainSparklez. They're pretty much the cream of the crop in terms of the video game end of the YouTube spectrum because they allow people to get to know them as people, and not just "Hi, I'm playing this game, with this gun" because yes, some do that too.

Unfortunately, it's just a another way for people to express things. There are so many, because it's seem as such an easily accessible format so people just jump and go for it.

Im not sure, but I know what you mean especially here at yttalk it seems like gaming is majority of the channel genre here. I myself do comedy sketches.
