Is it harder nowadays to make a successful YouTube channel?

When YouTube started in 2005, there weren't a lot of channels making videos on a regular basis, nowadays there's just so many that it's hard for newtubers to stand out. But at the same time; there's a lot more people watching YouTube than in the early years, so your potential audience is much higher. So what do you guys think? Was it harder to make a popular channel in the early years of YouTube (Say: 2005-2007) or is it harder now?

When YouTube just started audience was too small and now it's hard to compete with the big players who can afford a whole creator team. The golden years where somewhere between 2008 and 2012.

Although it's harder to grow a new channel, I think it's easier when your bigger since you have a larger audience to reach

I think it could go both ways. It was harder back then because it was just starting out and had people known the success of YouTube back then, they could've easily started a following back then and just be this huge YouTuber now. At the same time, there's so many videos and channels out there today that it's hard to really sift through them all. The question really isn't whether it's hard to become popular. The question is whether or not you can stand out from others on the site. Something you also have to take into consideration is that this is practically a new generation, compared to the 2005 YouTubers. So in this case, it's better to go for this crowd of YouTubers because there's more of a chance to find more friends and people who do the same videos as you. There's just more possibilities with more YouTubers. People say that it's so hard being successful, but that's because they try too hard. They don't try to be a human being. They try to be famous. And with a mindset like that, you won't make it far. Being you and having your own sense of style/personality will take you farther because people like genuine over cliche and unoriginal. That's just my two cents, though.
