Is HD the be all and end all?

Don't forget that plenty of people are watching YouTube on their TVs now, and 480's going to look awful blown up on a large screen size.

We have a 4K camera at college.. you can only record like 5 minutes on a 32GB SD card cause the video file is so bloody big :')
 
what with studying media, I learn that it is always best to make your work the best possibly quality you can, so for instance if you're making a film reel of all your work, you could have enjoyed making it so much but if it's not up to quality standards there is no point using it. What I'm saying here I feel applies to youtube too, if you're making videos you want it to be presentable so that it lets your viewers know you're serious and treat your videos with the best intentions

That is because it's a wider aspect ratio than 16:9, it's creating the "movie style" feel with a film, Most cinema's or movie theatre's use this aspect ratio too, so putting it on to DVD/Blu-Ray makes this effect. It's nothing to do with HD

Oh that's your hardware then, nothing to do with HD. If you have the right screen, you won't get those lines. It's just like if I watched a 4:3 movie on my computer I'd get humungous black lines to the left and right.

Also HD does not account for screen resolution at all. You can get those lines top and bottom on a 240p movie! It depends on the ratio of the video. HD 1080 means there are 1080 lines making up the video, but ratio is just how rectangular or square a video looks.
 
I know me personally would be fine at that quality, however. I do think that youtube, its creators, and quality is always moving forward. That being say I think its important to keep up. People might compare quality with other channels. I dont, but I dont know how other people think. Its important to keep your pc up to spec and upgrade every few years.
 
id say hd is everything nowadays people are so picky about their content on youtube sometimes hd can draw the line between a subscriber and just a view
 
I always watch in 720p if possible, since I enjoy watching fullscreen on a high res monitor.
I think it's especially important on graphically advanced games like far cry 3 and stuff, but other than that, 480p shouldn't be that big of a deal.
