I need feedback/advice for our Minecraft/Pixelmon video, please!

Hello! My name is Micha, one half of the channel simply named Micha & Zetah.

I would like to get feedback and advice for our Minecraft video. We're both new to LP's and YouTube and easing into things slowly. While we poked around in Sven Co-op and Starbound, we attempted to get creative with Minecraft and also attempted to have a better intro and outro, as previously we had just been using a intro text screen with no outro.

My personal issues with our video was:
  1. the music seemed a bit loud, but Zetah and a few other people we showed the video to said they weren't having issues with it
  2. I need to know if I am understandable. I have had speech issues with pronouncing things (Speech therapy + pudding in a straw = agghhh didnt help) and when I get nervous or excited I will speed-talk gibberish. Some people have related my voice to a kids, does it bother you watching the video?
  3. We swap between views to not only switch things up, but sometimes one of us will catch something the other won't or will have a better view of. Sometimes we have view-switches because one of our recorders decided it hated us and broke temporarily. Is this affecting how you watch the video at all?
  4. We chipmunked through some parts because we didn't want to have you sitting there for X amount of time as we herp derped our way through the first few minutes.

We're trying to get to the point where we can have more free banter with each other as well as talking towards the viewers, except we're still a little "HURR HURR WE RECORDED OUR VOICES HEEHEHEHEEH" brain-dead. I also won't lie, we're complete noobs (as I believe I mentioned in the video) at Pixelmon and so it's a learning experience as we go along.

Thank you for watching!

I had a look.

I enjoyed it, I think it is fine. Two things I noticed. Do you lads use a pop shield on your microphone?
A pop shield is something that breaks the air from directly hitting the microphone, to avoid having those "pf" sound at the beginning of speech.

<- thats a popshield, the round thingy :P

I think you can make on yourself pretty easy, there are some guides on the internet.

Also, since there is two of you, how do you record your voices? Do you record them as one, or separately each voice and then sync them up?

Thanks for watching! I have seen those but tbh never knew what the heck they were, I do not have one! I am currently using a headset. Do you think if I angled the mic away more there would be less of the 'pf' noise? I know if I scoot it away from my mouth and upwards, it doesn't get breathed on (That I can tell) and still picks my voice up. I am used to having the mic right in front of my mouth though so I will scoot it back without noticing. We're currently pooling our spare money in order to get better things in the future, such as a microphone - and with the added knowledge - a pop shield!

Zetah does most of our editing at the moment, and unfortunately she went to bed a little bit ago otherwise I would have a clearer answer for you. At the moment we're recording our audio with our video, so there's the game and then there's our voice chat in the background. As far as I know when she's piecing the clips together she fits the voices together and scoots the bits around as needed to make sure things don't get too garbled.

Oky! Thanks for a detailed response.

Yes, I do not own a pop shield, or descend equipment, so I can talk from experience here, and hopefully help!
Angling or moving away the mic will help. When I record my vocals, I have my microphone on the side, think of it as a angled parallel things (wow, I think I just broken laws of physics and math with that comparison). So that should help.

From watching yogscast and other collab channels, I noticed a way they record their voices. The problem is, that if you record all the voices over skype or TS for example, and use the feed from it, software tends to ruin the quality, by compressing the sound.

So what a lot of people do, for example you have A and B. The would be talking over their software like normally, but each person would only be recording their side of the voice.

So if A and B are recording it. Person A has a recording software running only for his voice, and person B has a recording software running only for person B voice.

Then you send those two file to the person editing it, and he merges them together. You see what I mean?

The problem with recording a feed from vent/ts/skype is that it loses quality, but also you might have jumps in your connection, or dropping the signal, hence having just blank spots in your audio.

The way to sync them, is when you both start recording, just say in sync something like 1-2-3-4-mark, and say it together, so then when you paste both clips, you know what part should be aligned together. : )

I hope it makes sense, I am not good at explaining stuff, but trust me, it is easier done than said :)

The voice does not bother me, and I can not notice the whole "speech issue" thingy. Plus I, and I am sure there is a lot of people out there who are the same, like live things. I like when things are rough around the edges, and it is natural. And it adds a sense of humanity to the party presenting their work.

I never listen to albums for that reason, I always listen to live recordings, since they feel more natural. And I am sure there is a lot of people out there, who are the same :) So its good.

I hope this helps. : )

Can't you play another game? I have a thing with mine craft :-(

Zetah's in the process of moving (finishing packing now, leaving on the 11th) so we're sort of floating ducks on what we already have for now. Do you have any suggestions of what we should play?

Thank you a lot for the information, I will be sure to tell Zetah about it tomorrow. What you have typed made sense, I will talk with her about trying recording our voices this way and see what we can do. It is also good you don't notice the speech issue, it is one of the things I pick up the most when I listen to recordings of myself and it drives me absolutely nuts. LOL.

Well always think of it this way, when you do something, especially creative and unique work, and this is that, snce its yours and there is nothing like this out there, you know what you can and cannot do, you know you limits and potentials, as well as all your issues and things that you know are wrong.

Mind you, a lot of times, those issues are overblown out of proportion, since it is you, and we tend to think in "ou he is better, he talk better, he plays better, he is more funny" when ever looking at someone else.

So always try to filter in your head the "what can I do better" from the "THIS IS GOING TO BE JUDGED BY GOD SO I MUST DO EVERYTHING PERFECT AND I KNOW I CAN PULL THE MOON TO THE EARTH IF I TRY!"-kinda thing. :)

Thanks for the advice! :) And after watching Bruce Almighty when I was 11 or so has made me squint when thinking about pulling the moon anywhere near the Earth. :P

What do you think about horror games? I love horror stuff myself :-D
I love horror! And at the same time I am TERRIFIED of it! I do not handle scary things by myself very well. Ghosthunt 1 and 2 (maps for Garrys Mod) took several play throughs before I would be the first one to go towards the scare, and even then I get jittery just thinking or trying to do the map by myself. RE6 had me nearly crapping myself in fear when I got forcibly split up from Zetah during a night time graveyard level. Stuff like the horror maps in Sven Co Op has me pop between irritated and scared, mostly due to what the map is and what I keep dying to. We recorded a few episodes of us playing the Resident Evil: Covert Operations map for SvenCoOp, and while I used her as the human shield and made her go first most of the time, my fear slowly turned into being REALLY MAD because we had accidently toggled it to INSANE when we started and the respawn rate combined with low ammo made us die around 26-30 times each and had us tearing our hair out. Then the map was bugged and we flipped our tables.

I have been tempted to do horror videos by myself when Zetah is busy or with Zetah when she isn't busy but I haven't figured out what game I/we should play or how it would go. I am one of those people who kind of either rambles on about random crap or sits there in pure silence being terrified until I get to a "AGJKSHFGKSHDFJ" moment.

Well there is always good old slender the 8 pages for a start.

Though he makes people s**t themselves at first he becomes nicer in time :-P
