If you have Gimp then you could just download a really cool font off dafont.com and add some shadowing and strokes and stuff. That in itself would improve the look of the thumbnail alot.

For the example I left you? I don't remember what size it was. I just made it really fast to show you lol.
I use 1280x720 for my thumbnails.
