Humanity Is About to Launch the Biggest Telescope into Space in Human History video. Launched on April 24th in the year 1990 on the space shuttle discovery, the Hubble Space Telescope has been orbiting earth for 28 years. Named in honor of astronomer Edwin Hubble, the Hubble Space Telescope was the first major telescope to ever be launched into space in human history. The James Webb Space Telescope is a space telescope developed in collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency that will be the scientific successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble Space Telescope is not only known for being the first ever Telescope to be launched, but is also known for taking some of the most breathtaking pictures ever (pictures of galaxy with camera sound effect “click”). Having taken thousands upon thousands of photos, the Telescope has accumulated over 150 terabytes in total archive, generating about 10 terabytes of new data per year. Orbiting around Earth at about 17,000 mph or 5 miles per second, the Hubble Space Telescope is a reflecting telescope which uses Visible and Ultraviolet light to take sharp precise photos of planets, stars and galaxies within our universe. These include detailed pictures of the birth and death of stars, galaxies billions of light years away and more. Currently costing over 4.5 billion dollars in total costs, the Hubble Space Telescope is planned to be decommissioned around the year 2020, which is in fact where it’s formal successor comes into the picture. The James Webb Telescope, also named Next Generation Telescope, is named after James Edwin Webb, who served as the second administrator of NASA (from February 14, 1961 to October 7, 1968,) The James Webb Telescope is currently under development with a planned launch date of May of 2020. The James Webb Telescope was initially meant to launch in the year 2007, Even with these delays however, the james webb telescope will be an absolute marvel in telescope technology, being the successor of the hubble It will be the most powerful and biggest telescope humanity has ever launched into space. The Hubble Space Telescope orbits around the Earth at an altitude of around 570 km above Earth, whereas the James webb telescope won’t even orbit the Earth at all! Instead it will be sitting at the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrange point at about 1.5 million kilometers away! Four times further from Earth than the moon is. Keep in mind the hubble is only 568 kilometers away from Earth while the James webb telescope is going to be 1.5 million kilometers away, so unlike the James Webb Telescope, if needed we could send help to repair the Hubble Space Telescope or make sure it’s still running without a problem, however with the James Webb Telescope, there's no way we could send anything to go repair it with our current capabilities. While the Hubble Space Telescope sees in Visible and Ultraviolet light, the James Webb Telescope will see in red and infrared light. Which means the James Webb Telescope will have a much greater capacity to see and focus on brighter objects and extremely far galaxies. The new James Webb telescope will be more than 7 times stronger than that of the hubble telescope, (fun facts on screen ex. Being able to see a penny 24 miles away, One side of the telescope will be hotter than Death Valley, the other is colder than Antarctica) Its telescope will be so strong that it might actually be able to see the first light ever in the universe by observing the first stars and galaxies that formed just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang
