How to make good thumbnails?

Ok, so I hear all the time how important good thumbnails are. My question is, is there a free way to make professional looking thumbnails? All I have to work with right now is paint and I can't really do a lot with it.
 
Practice a lot in Photoshop is really the only way. That and watching tutorials (followed by more practice).

Thank you but my problem is that I don't have photo shop. Is there, by chance, a free version floating around somewhere?

I will definitely look into that. Thank you. I've been told by many people that I have really funny videos but I need better thumbnails to help draw viewers to them. So I want to make some that will catch peoples attention. Thank you again, :)[DOUBLEPOST=1437068357,1437068314][/DOUBLEPOST]

Been compared to Adobe PhotoShop. I think I'm going to give it a try.

Give it a go dude, you have nothing to lose, I honestly found it great as it has some of the things that Photoshop has
 
try gimp if you want something free.. also i just usually take a screenshot of something interesting from the video but sometimes i'll add more stuff to make a pretter thumbnail
