I always get my thumbnails from the video frame that has the title video on like the one in my signature! Easily readable and smoothing your viewers scrolling experience on YouTube!
I'd recommend downloading GIMP. Pretty nice open-source photo editor. I've used it to create all my video thumbnails for the last few months. Good quality results, and safe to download. Thumbs up
Picmonkey.com is the best. It is an online photo editor. I use iMovie and I just right click a section of my video and save it as a freeze-frame. Then I save it to my desktop and open the picture in PicMonkey. You can add words there too. Its great. Check it out when you can. LunaPic is good for making PNC or logos. I use that site for most of my designs for my Spreadsheet shop.
