Ok, this is what works for me.
I currently am in a phase of doing friday the 13th game videos and this is a HOT game with a lot of highly active youtubers searching.
I go to the larger channels and compare my quality to theirs and also I will check the comments. I Will post a comment on the pinned and most replied comment with something relevant to the game (DO NOT ADVERTISE YOURSELF TO OBVIOUS).

Just recently someone has quoted me and replied to it saying something like "hey I checked your channel you have good tips like doing this etc etc" and by this being the latest, most liked comment on the pinned comment it has brought ALOT of attention to my videos.

It only happened 3 hours ago and I've had over 500 views and 20 subscribers enjoying my content from that one comment.

I do this across multiple relevant videos and it does work really well. Offer the comment some information and it gets noticed and rewarded.

I hope this helps you guys.

That's useful, thanks. I have also subbed to a few small Lets play channels like mine which I find interesting. I leave them comments on the videos I watch and maybe some of their viewers check my channel out. Just never openly ask people to check out your channel, give some feedback or constructive criticism.

We have done the same, Sub to a few similar channels, leave nice comments on recent videos.

I only ask people to sub if I know them and feel comfortable asking. Also, ask people to tell others about the channel.
