How to do montage editing?

I want to try montaging a video or two. I currently have VideoPad(video editor) and Jahshaka (open source equiv. of After Effects).

Anyone with experience who can help me?

Dude why dont u use MOVIE MAKER, thats the easiest free software ever, video pad editor is cool, it has awesome precision!
Just place clips beside each other, split the unnecessary part of the clips, speed up/down the clips as u want
AND U R DONE

I'm not sure if you're joking or what, but Movie Maker is a bit too simple. There's plenty of other programs that offer a wide variety of features that can be used to make awesome montages.

Photoshop is a picture editing program, not a video editing program.

I do video editing anyway, and I can do video montages over there very easily

Usually people edit montages in Premiere Pro and After Effects retiming using Twixtor.
