How the hell does this guy grow so fast with no promotion?

Sub4Sub + Google AdWords is probably what hes doing.

Google AdWords is honestly great for views, I tested it the other day for 24 hours just to see a change and it really does increase your views fast but it's not that great for subs.
 
sometimes people just get really lucky. Some body my have picked up on some of his videos and are promoting them somewhere.

I completely get it, because an ex friend I have has 40k subs and she started a couple monthes earlier then me and she's kind of always been more popular because of her art and I've always been jealous of her >_>
But it's just motivates me more to work hard and make more unique content.

Why not just ask the guy how he manages to do it? If he's honest and has nothing to hide, I see no reason why he wouldn't tell you, except if he's insanely busy.
 
People have already mentioned the plausible possibilities but your forgetting one key piece to being successful on YouTube. Luck.

For all we know he could have got damn lucky with the timing of his upload who he shared it to or who happened to see it. Its not out of the blue for that to happen because its happened to a few people.

By the sounds of it your doing everything right so I say keep it up and keep pushing onwards, your growth will come naturally.
