How often did you switch your niche before you settled into one?

I've Got It
Recently, I was really into making my channel about commentary on pop culture and trending YouTube topics, but after doing a review of sorts for a movie and REALLY loving how that process went, I feel like changing my niche up.

Now, I know I could start a whole new channel to do this, but since I only have ~200 subs I think that switching up the videos I do wouldn't be a big issue, right?

Back to the original question though...how long did it take for you to settle into a niche you liked? How often did you switch up or did you know for a fact you wanted to do ONE thing and push on from there?

I always done comedy/sketch content. I went heavy into gaming for a bit but realized I was doing what everyone else is and I lost my freedom. So now I do vlogging, but it's more comedy/sketch themed now.

My first episode was mostly winged so we didn't get a lot of funny moments, it's just a decent "hi".

Personally I have switched quite a few times before I settled into the niche of gaming/commentary videos. I actually did some airsoft videos back in the day, and even a channel that had absolutely no purpose. These were all in my younger teenage years, and once I hit 17 or so i actually anchored down on a topic and stuck with it!

Keep your old videos and channel and just keep uploading new videos... unless the name of the channel and original content is wildly different then you might want to start afresh... you'l get back the 200 subs in no time and viewers who'd come back for your new videos.

When i first started my channel i already knew what i want to do, which is sharing my dive videos. I originally did not have any commentary or talking on my videos but i grew to now add instructional videos and just chatting about my dive experiences

I cant say I've done a sharp swap but I have done a bit of a gradual transition. Originally I wanted to academically cover films that were so obscure they either didnt have an online presence or what presence did exist was very poor quality. after the first 2 or 3 months I realised that unless the film had some kind of sexual content I wasnt getting very much traffic at all, so I decided to soften just a little bit on the academic side of things and also to try and include a couple more mainstream films in per season (15 videos) since then my view counts picked up quite a bit over the last few months...though quite whether thats due to the very subtle content changes or just because of the momentum of releasing videos regularly I cant say...

Technically, twice.

At first, I was a photography channel called DarkStarPhoto because that's the name I operate under as a photographer, but I didn't want to limit myself to just one subject - so I changed my name to DarkStarMedia and I was sort of an "everything" channel for a few months. I did the occasional Let's Play, the occasional challenge, the occasional blog and the occasional fact video.

Once I realised my passion was in making more educational content, I rebranded and overhauled my channel completely to what it essentially is now. I'm now more focussed on linguistics as that's what I enjoy talking and learning about, but I do also dabble in general knowledge from time to time!

I would say since you do have some subs to make sure you make an announcement or make the transition slowly, and if they don't respond well to that make another channel it's too easy to have another channel and keep that audience or double it to risk losing loyal subscribers and fans. I've been wanting to do something different but since my channel is called Skyler Henricks Vlogs I don't want to overwhelm the channel with something new and different, instead I want to add another side channel that uploads less frequently and has a different style of video. Hope this helped you in your thought process!!
