How much money do people make on YouTube?

I understand that this is probably subjective on some level. The advertising rates maybe higher or lower for some videos. What is the average amount made per 1,000 video views? I know the amount can be different. But, there is probably a rough average. I'm trying to figure out if it is worthwhile to invest money into making videos or if this should just be a hobby.

Hobby. From what I've seen, it's not exactly that way; you make money based on how many people not only see your video, but how many people either watch or click the ads that appear in your monetized videos.

Make it a hobby for now. It takes a lot of time till you get enough money for it to become an income unless you're a super popular person already.

I heard that it's about 3$ but as far as youtube said in the partership you only get money when people accually click the ad. Thats what i read

Alright here's my tips, do what you may with it:

If you like making videos do it. If you have a lot of extra money laying around and you really want to get some extra exposure so that people watch your videos and such, then go for it. But don't go crazy obviously and spend a ridiculous amount of money hoping to get tons of subscribers.

If I had a lot of money to spend on advertisement I would do 1 of these two things:
- Many big youtubers have a business email, email someone that does videos like you do, and ask if they would shout you out for a certain rate. Now while some youtubers don't do this, I know of A LOT of youtubers that do. So this would probably translate to quite some extra subscribers, but once again be very wise with the amount of money you spend.

- If you get beat up in a video or have some stunt that is crazy, send it to world star and for 1500$, you will get I can guarantee about 15-30 thousand subscribers onto your channel if uploaded. That is if you already have good videos to begin with. (THIS ONLY WORKS if you probably have a prank channel, or some stunt channel BTW).

As for RPM (or money per 1000) I myself can get 1$ per 1k views for example, but the bigger you get and depending on click rate it can go much higher. I know @markkaz gets like upper 2$ per 1k, and thats just what I think he said in the past, so don't quote me. And I bet you if your at a mill+ subscribers, you probably can get 3-5$, maybe even more for certain ads that are bidded for your video, which are more expensive. But since i'm not there I cannot give you an accurate assumption.

When it comes to making money on youtube, the simple ad revenue is not too good for making money, because everybody just skips ads, but if you get partnered, most networks don't allow thier affiliates to share that information. Like me... But! I can share with you that it is a pretty small amount due to me having low views, subscribers, likes, comments, just over all channel productivity. (Your payment isn't based off of just one thing)
