How many GB of RAM ?

Your issue is more likely to be with the CPU rather than the RAM

Most of the laptops I see tend to have good RAM but a pretty mediocre CPU

My laptop has 7,73 usable GB of RAM and still works a bit slow when running After Effects... It is a brand new Acer Aspire, so it should work better.

How many GB of RAM are enough for most video editing software to run without any lagging problems and crashing errors?

I work on 8GB as well. If you did increase, I would go to 12, nothing too drastic. Sounds like a new processor would benefit you more than more ram though.

AMD E-300 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.30 GHz

yea that's defiantly going to hold you back my laptop has around those same stats and would take me around 2hrs to use certain editing features. now with the new pc i can do it in about 15 mins sometimes less

this is my gaming pc

I can't increase it. It came with 4GB and I increased it to 8GB. It is the maximum amount of RAM it can go to.

i have 16GB of ram and when i am doing video editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 i can used up to 12GB of it so haveing a bot more might help. but as people have sed you need a good GPU and CPU

Are you sure? The way I see it from the way your explaining it is that their are two RAM slots. You could take both RAM sticks out and replace them with higher grade sticks.

8GB should be fine, You might need to go into prefrences and make sure it can use multi-core processes
If not, You may need to clean out your laptop,
What processor does it have?

You might want to purchase an external hard drive to put the movies ect on, The use a program called CCleaner, It cleans out some temporary internet files and such, I once had it clean out 50gb in one go, It does not delete any of your files btw, look it up :)
