How many GB of RAM ?

My laptop has 7,73 usable GB of RAM and still works a bit slow when running After Effects... It is a brand new Acer Aspire, so it should work better.

How many GB of RAM are enough for most video editing software to run without any lagging problems and crashing errors?

8GB should be fine, You might need to go into prefrences and make sure it can use multi-core processes
If not, You may need to clean out your laptop,

What's your CPU? You should have enough ram, it may be your CPU bottlnecking.

RAM hasnt anything to do with rendering. If you want to speed up rendering you need to update your GPU and CPU.

i run 16 and few friends are running 32 and 64. i found 16 to be a great amount. I focused more on my evga 670 ftw and i7 3770 for the speed.
