How long should an end slate be?

Taking over the world... ...one kid at a time!
Since YouTube has unveiled the new Autoplay feature at the end of videos, it's made me rethink how long an end slate should be.

In the past, I've typically made mine around 20 seconds long, with some unscripted throwaway content of the girls playing or goofing around, to keep people watching and give them enough time to click on annotations.

However, now pop-up Cards are the big thing, and Autoplay keeps the videos coming. Annotations are going extinct. Do I need a 20 second run-out at the end of every video? Could it be hurting and increasing viewer abandonment?

I'm wondering if anyone has done any experimenting around with this and what you found out!

A typical end slate is about 20 seconds.

Also, I think annotations are still in. But i don't remember if you can do that and pop up cards at the same time.

To clarify, I meant annotations are going extinct because they don't work on most devices, and more and more views are coming from places other than a desktop computer.

As someone who really hates the autoplay feature - as I skip to the next video either on a playlist or when I dang well want to - I think annonations are a live and well. I think 20 seconds is a pretty good time. Time to look at and click annotations, but not enough time to get bored waiting if you were watching a playlist or something.

I am having no success with cards, but I still get annotation clicks. (I guess some people still watch videos on their computers!) My end card is 12 seconds long. Once I figure out how to make cards work for me, I may rethink my end card.

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with an endslate, especially one that's around 20 seconds. It allows you to post icons (links) to your other socials, clips of past videos, and call to actions. I think annotations will still have a place in some form, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a small endslate.

Do you think it's another video which is going to be suggested? For getting higher retention rates it's good to consider whether you want the end slate or not.

But..... you're already in a position you don't have to care about retention rate ;). Furthermore your video's are long enough that missing out that 20 seconds doesn't matter at all. I call you too big to fail in Youtube world, so I would suggest you do whatever you want with the end slate. In doesn't matter much whether you keep it or not. Imho.
