How long do ur videos last?

Hazzador

I Love YTtalk
I have cut my videos down to under 5 mins, since i think most people don't watch 10 minute videos from small channels. This has improved my audience retention, as it creeping up to 40% which is helping me out a lot. Im curious to find out how long ur videos last, i'm a gaming channel btw so i understand people who make other content will have diffrent video lenghts.

I make food reviews and I try my best to keep things below 4 minutes because people usually watch for the information about the food. However, i still try to do it in a very personal way so that the viewers can feel a connection with me. :)

Haven't realy thaught much about it, but it has allways been obvious to me that making videos over 8 minutes long as a new youtuber with smaller audiance will make people wander away from your videos unless they catch your attention right away, and it's not allways easy to make videos that catch peoples interests right away and make it last the whole video :P

I make vlogs and they're usually around 3 or 4 minutes. That's pretty much the length they naturally end up, but I wouldn't really want them to be any longer because of the retention thing and the fact that the upload would take an unbearably long time.

For myself it's:
However long the video needs to be.
I have a concept, film it, edit it, then shorten it and remove all the unnecessary stuff. After I find that I've removed about 1-2 minutes the video's are more fluid and compact. My impression shows are about 2.30 mins- 5 mins if I have a talking scene or chatting about a comment ect.
My last two videos are around 1.30 min.
My original Mental Mix was around 9 mins before I decided to Remaster it and made it under 8 mins. My new Mental Mix I'm currently working on, I'm aiming for 6 mins.
So yeah just depends on the type of video for me.

I don't usually set a strict length for my videos. I just edit them to cut out all boring and unnecessary stuff and what's left of it after that process makes the final length :)

I agree with this...

And so does YouTube...

They offer a nifty analytic called Audience Retention.

Here is how to access it...

Login to YouTube (via the Creator Studio) and search for Analytics:

Then click on the Audience Retention link:

When I pick my shortest video (2:19), YouTube shows a steady decline right from the start:

Yet when I pick my longest video (16:53), YouTube shows a steady 50%+ retention rate right until I show my call to action at the end:

The bottom line is those who dig our videos will watch until the end - even if it is really long.

Pro tip: I always provide a hint of something cool if my viewers watch until the end. For example, I might say, "Watch this until the end to see if Roxanne gets accepted into the college she always dreamed of attending."

My videos normally last around 1min - 2mins, but that's just the nature of our channel - any longer, and viewers would get bored with it!
