How does your country of origin affect your channel?

What language is your channel? I would hate to be restricted to a language that wasn't as prolific, I think I would feel trapped by it. Maybe not.

It's in english of course. I find it weird to do videos in my native language, don't know why... Maybe I got used to Markiplier, jacksepticeye and ksi so that makes me wanna do my videos in english. :P

I have a friend that wants to do a fitness channel in Bulgarian because he thinks that it would be popular in his country where, according to him, there are not a lot of channels like it - perhaps having your videos in your native tongue might be really good for people from a country with a rarer language.

Good question! I upload from Austria, so I get a lot of views from Austria and Germany, which is troublesome to me since there is a huge German speaking YT community and Austrians and Germans prefer to watch videos in German. (My videos are in English.) I would like to have more presence in the US and other English speaking countries. I'll be in the US soon so I'll see how it changes!

Austria: It... doesn't... quite boring acutally :) I get most of my views from USA and some other countries in Europe.

Servus!

I'm from England, but living in Poland, and the majority of my audience seem to be in the US. I'm not sure if that's because of YouTube making my videos easier to find for US people or if it's just that way because more US people use YouTube overall and so a higher % of my audience would always be from there. Either way the situation works great for me because English is of course my first language and so it might not have been ideal if YouTube sent me Polish viewers.

PS have any of you experimented with changing your YouTube location on the bar at the bottom? I usually have mine set to the UK to avoid getting Polish videos in my suggestions, so perhaps that has influenced why I still get English speaking viewers despite making my videos in Poland? It occasionally changes itself back or to Japan (no idea why Japan) but yeah.

I just love this community forum. How a simple question can help you so much. Like here in South Africa the support of local you tubers is rare as we kind of stray towards trends more than originality so it's difficult to kick off. Even worse is living in a small part of South Africa. But I'll give it some time. Like many top SA you tubers moved away to gain success.

I'm South African, and I don't think it's affected my channel much, although there's no way to know for sure. The majority of my views are from US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia (in that order) followed by a seemingly random list of countries around the world. I have 4 times as many US views as UK. I think it comes down to the audience retention your channel can achieve in each country. I've always had great average watch times in US, UK, Canada and Australia so this may have led to my videos being promoted there more than in other countries. The size of the US population also explains the ratio of views between US and UK with Canada coming in at half of the UK views.

I don't get even 1% of my views from South Africa :O Data is expensive in many parts of the world and internet speeds low so retention in many countries is lower than it could be, especially on longer videos.

I would also love to know for sure if channels in certain countries are given an edge, but I don't believe so.

PS. OP, have you seen the success Suzelle DIY is having? This is a great example of a home grown channel that is doing well even in SA's relatively small market. She had a slow start but her channel is booming since she started getting media attention. I think she's doing well because people here are craving original content with an SA flavour/humour.

I wanted to look at your channel but your link isn't working.
