How do you use social media for promoting?

My question is really more like, how do you get people to read your posts on websites, and what social media websites work best for this? Thank you.

Make it interesting. It doesn't matter if you are guest posting on TheVerge, if it's not interesting, it won't hold people's attention.

Twitter works great, if you use hashtags and know basic social media marketing.

You really don't get them. It's a sink or swim situation. They might click on it or not. In that case having a good thumbnail and title is key.

My facebook, twitter, tumblr I just post and it gets what it gets.
Reddit it find a subreddit that will be best choice and post.

My best luck without harsh comments is Facebook. The key is to get popular Facebook pages to share your stuff, not just you posting to their walls. One of my videos recently got 10k views in 2 days when before that it maybe got 20 per day, and these were mostly from one person posting my video to their wall. I posted one video to Facepunch.com that stirred up a lot of controversy over something stupid, it got me about 3k views I believe. They normally hate self promotion unless your content is good there, so be careful or they will troll-rape you.

This is the entirety of online promotion in a nutshell. 9Gag, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook pages, Google Plus communities... you will only attract negative attention if you spam or shamelessly self-promote. Unfortunately the phrase "no such thing as bad publicity" does not apply to YouTube.

OH. MY. GOD. YOU BETTER PREACHHHHHHHHHH. Seriously, this post is like just perfection. Per-fec-tion.

Make it relevant and interesting to the people you are trying to target. If they are interested in what you have to share they will be engaging. Otherwise they will skip right over it.

Also engage them. Ask a question. Give something that people will want to be a part of. I.E. facebook if more people are posting and answering it increases the chances of more people seeing it and checking it out.

I mean, besides having my videos in my tweets I just tweet my daily thoughts... be yourself...people like what you're thinking, then again, it could be different for gamers.

You need to find the right communities. I have a few places on Tumblr and FB that seem to have no trolls. I've been troll raped on Facepunch and Funnyjunk a bunch of times, whether it's my content or other content people didn't like. I p****d off a bunch of Reddit people because I mis-read a sub-reddit's rules... I got a lot of upvotes, but some people were like "dude, the stuff you are posting in here is cute, but it's the exact opposite of what should be in this sub-reddit".... Sad thing was, my videos had the top 3 spots in that sub-reddit until people started complaining, lol. I took them down once I figured out why everyone was p****d.
