How do you plan videos?

Music and Mess...
Thought it'd be interesting to trade ideas so, how do you guys plan videos out?

For music videos we break down the sections then film each section to make it easier on us. Vlogs we just sorta go with it! What do you do?

A good number of my videos are just heat of the moment things where I just happen to have a camera on me. Others I know some type of event is happening and I have the camera running and edit out the slow parts later (like mountain biking videos). Others I just find a good angle where I think something will occur and hope that I catch something cool (dogs charging towards the camera in slow motion is a good example of this)

Well for me I review tech products. So first obviously I have to test out the product for maybe a week testing all it's features and seeing how it performs. Then I type up an outline of the main points on the devices and it's specifications on google docs. I print this out and have it taped to the wall in front of me off camera so my review is guided and has focus.

I trained as a broadcast journalist so I pretty much stick to what I know!

1) What am I talking about?
2) Broad outline
3) Script (3 words = a second of dialogue)
4) Get on camera, but generally riffing on the script. So I never record it verbatim, but it acts as a framework for the video.

Well I mostly just review indie games (especially lately). I find games that are indie titles in early access, new releases, etc. I get copies through press requests or demos. I play for a few hours. I have a general outline of what I cover in each review. I record 20 mins or so of gameplay. I record my commentary. I edit splice up gameplay into that commentary.

Commentary is NEVER scripted. I literally wrote this down once and its all I use.

"Gamplay
Visuals
Audio
Replaybility
Drawbacks
Recap"

I cover those points free-form without any hesitation in speech because well, I know how to speak? I don't use a script or write any notes otherwise.

I'm pretty spontaneous. I decide what song I want to cover, then decide whether or not I want to do my own arrangement of it or use a pre-existing backtrack. If I'm going to arrange it (a cappella usually) I work out the logistics in my head then go to record the parts. Or I use the pre-existing track I want to arrange and use it as a base for my arrangement. Then after I record everything (the most I've had is 25 tracks, oy) I mix it all and then make the video, which right now is just a static picture but I plan to start recording myself soon. It's a pretty easy process cuz all I do is go "I feel like singing ___" and start working on it lol. have a long running list of songs I want to do, along with original stuff I just haven't posted yet :)

I don't vlog yet, but when I used to podcast I'd just turn on my mic and start talking, so I will probs be doing the same thing when I start vlogging haha. I have some scripts written for a small tutorial series I want to do after I upgrade my equipment, but it's more of a guideline: I plan to just read the script before hand, keep it open in case I miss anything, but for the most part just talk with the script as my outline.
