How do you get your lighting right

i got adobe after effects now and premiere pro so by by windows movie maker

should be better if i record in the day no problem its just at night i think the brown colour of my room doesnt help either
Yeah night is very difficult to film in. You need A LOT of light to pull out a good looking shot. I would stick to day until you get some lights :)

EDIT:

Also like 3 Schmoes said, color correction can help a lot. If your video has a bad yellow tint you can easily correct that out.

If you have some cash to spare that you want to invest in decent lighting, consider getting a cheap professional light set. Three lights on tripods that you can change in height. Hook the lights up to dimmers and set the lights up in a way to have a main light (fills in the right side of your face), a filler light (fills in the shadows on the left side of your face) and a backlight (gives you some depth from the background). Play with the light levels until you think it looks good.

I use an Amphibian Heating Lamp. I'm so serious. $21.
