How do people get custom URLs so early?

I've seen people who signed up last year and have 41 subscribers with custom URLs without numbers in them and stuff. It was my understanding that you had to be a larger channel before they'd offer a custom URL OR you'd have to prove a connection to the name (by proving you owned the domain or something) but then it seemed like it forced you to add a number to the end of the channel name or something?

How are these people offered custom channel URLs so early?
 
I think they required a higher subscriber count several months ago. Before that anyone could do it, for example me. I only have 38 subscribers.
 
I was under the impression it was at 100 subs, but i think it has to do with the number of videos you post, or maybe your activity usage to make sure you are an active account. Or maybe all you have to do is ask. haha ok I have no clue haha
 
See @ocslushie I ran channels last year that I never got custom offers on. I kind of screwed up with one though because I connected with domains so I got (name)1 and stuff instead of (name) like I wanted.

But I'm pretty sure it was just as difficult last year to get them as this year though I've got no real idea clearly lol
 
There were no limitations earlier. You could get custom URL for your youtube if you wanted to in advanced settings
 
Google plus. If you are active on there they let you have a custom URL. I had about 10 followers on there when I was allowed to get mine.

Yeah, they may pretend like they aren't shoving it down our necks but they still do. It's not as bad as it is made out to be though anymore. Good place for promoting.
 
the option appears in your channel after 100 subs. there might be a delay before you see it in your inbox but 100 subs is the key
 
I have a 120 subs and i have a custom URL so i'm just gonna assume you have to have 100 subscribers in order to do it. i had no idea there were requirements to get one until i saw this
