How do famous gaming youtubers make their thumbnails?

Vanoss and other Youtubers are great at making their own thumbnails typically using Photoshop and Illustrator.

I think it's better to make your own thumbnails, I understand some Youtubers who put out a lot of content probably have their hands full so they commission them out to someone, but I don't like the idea of someone else making my thumbnails.

I think it's beneficial to have the skill to make them yourself, and I wouldn't really use software that makes thumbnails, it all sounds a little tacky.

I usually google search to find a hot rule 34'd version of a female league character
throw that s**t in photoshop, add some text and something in the background

Personally I tend to google "<insert game here> wallpaper>" and "<insert game here> transparent logo". That usually gets me a 720p or 1080p official game art that I can use, plus a .png format game logo I can layer over it in Photoshop. For the episode numbers I use a royalty-free font. Google those too and look for one you like. Then it's just a matter of basic compositing in Photoshop or similar, with whatever creative ideas or tweaks you can come up with.

Alternatively you can start commissioning someone to do something more personal to your channel. I'd like to do that at some point.
