How do comments get ordered?

I've always wondered this.

Does each viewer see different comments as their top comments depending on their subscriptions and engagement with that commenter? So what you see is other channels you are subscribed to commenting, then the most popular comments, then the rest?

There is one video in particular (it's literally the most benign how-to) and some of the comments got vicious between commenters, not even about the video. People are so weird.

Anyway, that comment now appears at the bottom of the comments (this is a fairly recent video), but it has a lot of engagement. Is this because the overall community gave it a thumbs down? I am considering deleting it because it is so irrelevant to the video, but I typically stand by my guidelines of only deleting content that is hateful to a person or group of people or contains language I don't want on my channel.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Under advanced settings when you upload a video, theres the option to choose what comments are highlighted in the video's feed.
I think you can choose to highlight comments from like, top commentators, channels with x amount of subs(you can adjust the number), long-time subscribers, most liked comments, etc...
So basically the video-maker controls what the comment section looks like.

Thanks for your reply! All I see in my advanced tab is to order comments by top commenters or newest first, no further options. Am I missing another spot to change settings?
