What gaming will you be doing? Because I can tell you now, a gaming PC even on a budget, $300 is probably what the graphics card will cost you.

Save up for a better build...one that will really last you. I don't know anyone in their right mind who would spend so little on a PC (unless you somehow got the best parts for that price, but that's pretty doubtful).

It is probably impossible to build gaming pc at such price. You can try getting motherboard and cpu + salvage of last pc. For starters intel hd 4000 gpu should be suffice. I recommend getting cheapest motherboard with LGA 1155 as far as I recall and intel core i5 - 3750 non-k version this would be wisiest investment.

You could build a computer that plays games for that much, but not very well. I built a PC for my mom earlier this year for a pinch over $300 running an AMD A4 APU (CPU and graphics processor all in one) and I think 6-8GB of value ram. It wasn't built for gaming, but I was surprised to find it was able to play New Super Mario Brothers on the Wii emulator I installed on it, as well as less graphic-heavy games like Fez and Killing Floor. I doubt it would be able to play ARMA 2, but an APU budget build could easily play older or indie games. I agree with everyone so far though, you want something with more longevity. I'd say $600 would be a good budget price point.
