I'm trying to connect my rode mic to my MacBook Pro. My MacBook only has one audio headphone port.

There is a way to go into settings and change the headphone port to make it a external mic port to use my mic

But when I plug it in and switch it on my MacBook is not recognising that it's even plugged in so I can't select the mic??am I doing something wrong?

The port you have is a headphone port. A port for external speakers and microphones. I have never tried turning into an input port (even though there seems to be an option to do so in the audio system preferences). But you mac need to find a 3.5mm to USB adaptor.

Other wise, your rode mic will have to attach to your previously mentioned dslr (but some don't have an audio input). You will have to be careful if you do that though, rode mics when connecting to a dslr sometimes give off a silent buzzing in the background of audio due to the format compression.

I would advise using a usb rockband mic, they are surprisingly good and can easily be connected to Audacity or Garageband. it will be recognized as a Logitech mic.

There should be 2 ports for audio jacks, the one for a microphone should have a small mic icon next to it. You can buy USB adapters instead I think...When you've plugged it in and switched the microphone on it won't pop up saying it's been connected since it's not hat kind of microphone (basically it doesn't have built in software to tell the computer it's connected because it wasn't built for plugging it into a PC) anyways, so on the recording software, just select the 'high definition audio' or whatever the name is of the soundcard and it'll work. If you don't know the name of it just try every option until it works :)

It's not got a mic port just a headphone port

And I don't need a USB adapter as it fits into the headphone port
Headphone port = audio goes out.
Mic port = Audio goes in.

USB = data goes both ways.
That's what I was suggesting. I have a MacBook and a rode vid mic. I haven't been able to make the audio record into the mac when using the both with an external audio mixer that has a a mic port and a usb adaptor. So I just use my rockband mic and get surprisingly good results for my voice over stuff. I was suggesting from personal experience.

Here, have a listen to what I was able to pull out from the rockband mic:

I'm not sure if you can turn an output jack into an input jack on a mac, but you could browse around your audio settings for the port settings, if you are unable to change it then the 3.5mm jack to USB adapter is what you'll need unless you can plug the mic into a camera

^^ This guy knows what he is doing :)

You can do I as there are instructions here but when I plug the mic in it doesn't come up on the list
