Grumble

They count, but you need a ton of ratings for it to actually do anything. I mean, it makes sense. Viewer retention, tags, and views count the most. Then activity on the video like comments and likes. The ones with more activity go up, of course, but if people see a bunch of down votes, they'll leave, which loses you viewer retention.

See that thing you said at the end is my worry. I know mass dislikes always intrigue people, but YouTuber is full of bandwagon hoppers, who will dislike just to join in.

It's so annoying. I'm legit worried that I have to disable them on all future videos now :/

I think if that was my video I too would want to disable the ratings... just because the person is obviously being entertained by doing this and I rather not give them the satisfaction.

Sucks to hear Frankie, just know I have you a thumbs up!

Ratings do so little for the search engine, and so many people will turn away from a video if the dislikes are even half of the ratings. I disagree with the philosophy that it is okay to have haters do that, saying that they are just helping you. I guess just try not to make enemies or disable the likes for a while like you are.

Ratings tend to do more than you think. If your video is weighted the same as a competing one, the video with more ratings will show up higher in the search. You don't need a ton of ratings. Just one more than your competition.

Ratings also do nothing to affect viewer retention. Once people start watching a video, their watch time won't be affected by ratings at all. It might discourage people from watching in the first place, but if that was the case, that theory would have trouble explaining the number of videos with more dislikes than likes that still get huge viewer numbers.
