Girls and Youtube

In my niche it's totally opposite. Being in the weight loss community, it's dominated by woman. I go searching for weight loss journey's and I tend to find a bunch of woman videos with tons of views...why? Because they post these watch me shrink videos where they have panties and a bra on. I wonder if my video would go viral if Itried squeezing into my wife's bra & panties.

See I just lost ya guys as subscribers right, we'll of course that would have to mean you're already subscribed.

My only beef with it are girls who obviously have their chesticles hanging out, and they know it. And they know that you know it. And they're glad that you know it, because, if you know it, then they know that you'll know that you'll be more likely to click the thumbnail, thus, more views. Sigh.

Wow I am exhausted reading all 15 pages of posts before mine! Being a girl youtuber, I felt like contributing to the discussion . Also this kinda hits close to home since I know how it feels being outnumbered (as a female engineer in a male dominant field) ^_^

Anyway, in response to the original post, I feel that girl youtubers also have the benefit of a girl support system which may account for views. Although, I feel like at times girl youtubers can get kinda of clique-y (form groups amongst other girl youtubers) which makes it hard to befriend a few.

Could it possibly be that the lack of female vloggers (in comparison to male vloggers) skew the statistic that girls get more views? Meaning if there were more girls out there, then the views wouldn't spike at these outlier female vloggers. There will be a female vlogger for each flavor of creep out there! (joking)

I participate in the beauty/fashion community. Yeah stuff can get cliche as an outsider looking in. But keep in mind these videos of the beauty/fashion type are meant for other beauty/fashion enthusiasts. It gets very niche very quickly. I do agree that at times it gets mundane; my first channel was all about beauty subscription unboxings and by the end of it, I did not want to do another unboxing. In my second channel I wanted to do something different but still be in that niche. I now do thrift hauls, DIYs, and am documenting my "project pan". With project pan, I've noticed that its a niche of its own and I've gotten new subscribers who are also doing their own project of sorts. We've become a support group for each other (viewer engagement is good, right?). Another aspect to this beauty community is to someday get free promotional stuff. Will I ever reach that? Maybe? I digress.

Now the discussion about appearance: I agree it is a frustrating topic. It says a lot about society as a whole: we value looks more than content. Or is it that we happen to notice looks before content? Could it be that attraction is first physical then intellectual?

You may not see it the same way, but these makeup tutorials / lookbooks can be similar to video game walkthroughs. It's basically a demonstration on how to accomplish a certain task; the task could be a look for a dinner date or how to pass a certain level in Portal. So come on, you're telling me you're tired of another foundation routine? Well I'm tired seeing another minecraft, SC2, even street fighter video. (Actually I lie, I can watching anything.)

Also reading the comments from other female posters; you truly are inspiring me to diversify channels. I've been doing a lot of planning for a math/technology channel, a cooking channel, and a random vlog channel. And as you can see, my primary reason to use youtube is to learn how to do stuff. What's yours?

If I am totally off base, let me know. I tend to do that. :-P

I will begin by confessing I haven't actually red through the entire 15 pages (I know... I'm cheating).

Do girls get more views than guys just because they look good? No. I don't believe so.

I think it just depends what category you're referring to here. There aren't a lot of girl vloggers out there because (I believe anyway) they get criticized more than girls that do beauty videos do. Vloggers are dominated by guys- I agree with @gizikw's original statement- if you actually look at the top youtubers, its very few girls who make that list. So in reality do girls really have THAT much of an advantage in the youtube game?

If you're talking about gaming channels, well I think any girl would get more views/ subscribers than a guy would in her position because its the opposite sex (A) and (B) its different. How many guys are there doing gaming channels vs. girls? Why wouldn't you subscribe to the opposite sex? I think that really is true in a lot of cases, not just gaming.

I do think that sex sells though and if a girl is willing to put herself out there like that, then it will be much easier for her to gain subbies/views.. but that can only get you so far. There's really not many (if any) "sexy" girls that are at the top of the game. In fact, I can only think of 2 girls that are "big" on youtube- Jennamarbles and Michelle Phan. Jenna does have that sex factor to her but she's clearly talented and I think THAT'S whats gotten her far. Michelle doesn't have that sexy factor at all and I wouldn't consider her cuter than a lot of girls (WITH talent) that I've watched. I believe shes gotten far in the game because she put a lot more effort into her videos and was one of the first to apply it in her genre.

SO though it might be irritating watching these girls just flaunt their parts around and play the sex card, in reality it gets them more initial views but it NEVER takes them all the way. The numbers prove it all.

That is THE hardest part of YouTube is starting your channel with your first actual face to camera post.. and 2nd challenge is being consistent. I was SO nervous posting my first few videos, even talking to my camera is still really awkward. I assume it gets better with time but it's still awkward.

I am going to make some girly videos.. fun tags and stuff like that. But keep in mind most of the videos that are posted under the beauty / guru forum are repeats on repeats on repeats. I want my channel to be different (and I assume everyone on YouTube does) but you gotta think outside of the box in order to achieve individuality instead of doing 'My Foundation Routine' for the millionth time.

Even though I really like make-up and fashion (hardly any girl doesn’t lol) I would just like to say THANK YOU. Too many girls (myself included at first) seem to think that to make it big on youtube the ONLY things we should talk about are make-up and clothes. So not true. ;)

I'll be honest, I'm a guy I see T&A and I tune in, don't mean that I'm staying for the party though. But that's just it. Views may be more important to them than someone clicking on the sub button.

I must disagree with you on this part. I think most girls are just into beauty/fashion ... just like most guys are into gaming. If you're referring to more girls getting into comedy, I just think there aren't too many girls that are comedians- irl there are much more male comedians than females as well. Its just about interest's at the end of the day, not necessarily females thinking that's something that we need to be into to make it big..

I won't lie, I can't watch fashion and beauty vlogs. Not because they aren't interesting but because they make me see just how little style I have. I'm a tee shirt/jeans girl. I don't wear jewelry and my makeup routine is simple and boring...

Girl vloggers sometimes are hard to relate to. They're young or really chirpy. (yea, I think that's the word I wanted) I end up watching male vloggers b/c I like seeing what the guys are up to.

I checked out your channel and I really enjoyed the way you spoke to the audience. You're not overselling something or acting weird to get views. It's like you're having a conversation with your gal pals and you make everyone feel like they're in your inner circle. I appreciate that. <3
