The developers have recently announced the development of Gimp 2.10. YES, THE DEVELOPMENT IS GOING TO BE SLOW. The good thing about this version is added 10/12 bit depth support for graphics. Despite this release, the design of the software is still going to be clunky and old, but the developers have promised interface changes will be modernized at some point in the future.
