Gaming Channels - "Characters"

Hey everyone,

I'm toying with the idea of starting a Gaming Channel, separate to my other content.

I've messed about with Gaming videos on my main channel, but with starting a new channel, I want to avoid making any silly mistakes.

My main thought is that a lot of the most popular gaming youtubers have "characters" that they play in their videos - Most of them act really high energy and try to keep the joke consistency as high as possible... have any of you consciously decided what your 'character' would be? Or do you just make videos and naturally develop a 'character' that way?

I know this potentially sounds conflicting with how a lot of people say "be yourself" - which is great advice, it's just about which part of yourself you broadcast aha.

Sorry, I'm rambling now, I'd just really like to hear any thoughts you guys have on this!

Thanks,
Oliver Age 24 :)

its not easy making a character look at this video

also dont say, i know myself the character is me because people do not know who they are and often lie about their characters.

I don't feel like I am a character at all :P
I feel like I am myself... most of the time at least.

I try to have more energy when I make videos than what I would usually have when I'm just sitting down and playing with friends for funsies.
So... natural growth? Idk. Hard to say. :troll2:

When I review, I am Conso of VGP, a reviewer as rational as possible, that gives games what they deserve. Address merits, and points out flaws.

The matter is that, I am too serious, or at least, not naturally fun. That's why I was toying with the idea to introduce a larger roster of people to the show.
Some may be friends willing to take part, the matter is that they are not very good at English, so I should find a workaround for that, the others can be basically myself, wearing different stuff and speaking with different accents, to also represent kind of irrational sides to the personality of the reviewer. And then of course my real life self, that acts behind the scenes and pulls the strings of all the other personalities. Gosh, I took the idea behind Killer 7 too seriously.

My character is that of an energetic (usually) guy, because it fits my niche of anti boredom. Yeah, it's not easy to develop one without practice and trial-and-error.

I know what you're saying, man. When I record, I kind of get into this more hyped up state that's different to my usual calm self. Voice changes, I get louder, and I talk faster. I don't know, it's just something that kind of happens when you start recording.

I've been pretty successful as a gaming channel & don't think I play a "character". What most gamers do is just amp up their normal personality. I usually have some coffee or an alcoholic drink before filming just to loosen myself up & have more energy. In real life I'm a bit quiet & reserved, but on YouTube I'm bubbly & weird. Both are my personality, just seen at different moments. :)

I don't understand the continual raised voices many have; it gets tedious after a while. The constant state of 'surprise' in their voice when many have manufactured the experience down to the second.

There's also this notion that because other channels act like it, it must be funny to mimic it. Sincerity goes a long way with me.

I've often seen 'character' channels and I do wonder if the joke IS that they're popular? :P

you need help before your alcohol use becomes something more. its not o.k to drink your way into popularly and its not healthy to your state of mind as it can lead to many problems in the future.

I feel like you're kind of exaggerating having a drink every once in a while, but that might just be me...[DOUBLEPOST=1419271606,1419271483][/DOUBLEPOST]

That seems a bit harsh, to be honest. Quite a few people do like that sort of commentary, and it does make it more interesting than a constant monotone voice.
