Frustrated with social media/branding.

Very frustrating. But lesson learned: Before figuring out a name, check Facebook, Youtube and Twitter pages. It's a mistake we made at Helprace and now we're living with it.

On a similar note: does anyone know how/why Youtube's redirection works?

Our company (helprace) wasn't available for picking in youtube. We've registered an account youtube.com/helprac but when youtube.com/helprace is typed in, it also works.

What gives? Does this means that even if you add the wrong keyword, Google somehow finds out your link between the Google+ page and assumes the name belongs to you? If so, how come it's not possible to change your URL.

Maybe if you just take out a letter from the name you want. For example my name is Kacey but I put kacypony instead of kaceypony. Granted kaceypony would probably still have been available. This was my first email name when I was about 13yrs. and I was careless not looking at my spelling... oops. Well it has stuck and I use it as my channel name now! :) kacypony just looks better than kaceypony anyway, there are an even number of letters lol!

I feel your pain more than you know. SandSeven was my original xbox live handle that was randomly generated. I kept it since I didn't know I couldn't change it without having to pay $50 for a new subscription, and fell in love with it because it was open EVERYWHERE.

Then with that false perception of security concerning my handle, I put off social media until well into my initial growth leaving me with 1 social media site that is my branding and the rest are the same at least with a "YT" in front which hopefully isn't to hard to remember.

PS
lol I am remember my Facebook Fan page and how it was offered back to me with the exception that he remained in control of it. Then the guild name that was stolen and ransomed for $300. I named the guild KatyPerry as an F U to the guy, and in doing so had so much fun making those videos. It's always the randomness of YouTube I love the most.

I only really have a Facebook page, youtube and a website, since I think Twitter is kinda dead. (atleast it is for me, no interest in it anymore) My brandname nor my personal name has been taken on FB/Twitter/Instagram afaik. SjoJug isn't that common, neither is Sjors Stuurman, so I'm good. Only thing I've been thinking is to change my YT link to SjoJug, but not sure... :p

I can honestly say I've never really had this problem. My screen name for basically everything since high school has been some variation of EvilMuska, and it doesn't seem like anyone but me as ever used it as far as I can tell. If I Google the name, it brings up a list of nothing but mentions of the name in forums and pages that I used to frequent or currently have an account for.

In the same light, GameSchwa is something that if you do a search for it, you get nothing but links to my channel, all my channel's social media, and random videos.

These names aren't expertly-crafted or anything, I just ended up with both the names completely by accident during random conversations with friends. I think it's more of a luck thing than anything else... and having very random friends, that helps.

Yeah they say that a good YT name is important and I agree. I spent a long time thinking about what names are popular and why. All the way down to how many syllables it is. How easy it is to spell, say, remember. Etc. Then you come up with a good idea and it's already taken :/ There are a few sites that check to see if a username is available across multiple sites at once. :Blackalien2:
