Yeah I would use videopad, you can switch to the free version after the trial is up. I used to use it till i got sony vegas, i liked it cause it was simple to use and you can render in full 1080p and custom settings.
I used to use Windows Movie Maker. It's very easy to use but doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles. It will do the bare minimum for what you need.
