~Note to staff: I'm honestly not sure if I'm in the right place; please let me know if I am in the right place, and if I'm not, where this should go. Thank you!

As the title says, I'm in a bit of an issue choosing a good modeling/animating program (that's free).
I know there's big-names out there, like Autodesk (sterrrr wurrrrz the clurrrrn wurrrrzzzzzzz
) but obviously that's WAY out of the price range for me.
I know two "good" (?) programs, free, though I'm clueless about both.
Unity and Blender.
Ups and downs of both exist, indeed, and I'm well aware of them. I just... ehm... Don't really know which would suite my needs.
My "needs" are:
Unity and Blender I've booted up both times, and both I've come up "Uh...... NOPE" and closed&uninstalled.
So, bottom line, which is better? Unity, or Blender? Or, is there an even better free one out there?
Thanks!

My "needs" are:
- Beginner Friendly
- Free
- Able to animate
- Able to model
- Able to make effects (E.g., cracks in that big letter made of 'stone' )
