Fraps Separate HDD/SDD Recording?

Shrocko

I've Got It
Okay, so Ijust started trying to record with Fraps, and I hover at 60 fps but randomly drop to 40-50 and lag for a few seconds. Apparently this is due to my HDD not being fast enough and/or recording on the HDD with my OS. Can someone explain all this to me and recommend a good, cheap HDD/SDD for Fraps Recording?

Think of it like this: You're reading a book, but the author is still adding chapters to it as you're reading it, how do you think that's going to work? It's no different with playing and recording to and from the same HDD, your HDD is under stress because you're reading off it (the game) and writing to it, which will bring in major issues.

Do you have a laptop or a desktop?

I have a custom built desktop

Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM. Take your pick on size, but the 1TB drives can be found for like $60-$70. I wouldn't bother with a dedicated SSD because they're so size limited right now.

Lets say I already have a seagate 7200RPM.

Can I get a cheaper one to store all my stuff on, and is there anyway to move all my files over to the new one? (Including OS, I don't have a disc)

No, you can't transplant an OS install from one drive to another easily. Reinstalling games and moving all of your files though is a simple drag and drop. Installing a new HDD and just leaving it blank for recording purposes is ideal. If you install games to the drive then you're stuck playing from (reading) and recording (writing) to the same drive which will have some performance issues.

Get a USB 3.0 Western Digital (My Book) 4 TB external hard drive for $138 on amazon. They work great, and that will last you a while. Once you're done editing, just go in and delete the original fraps video files from time to time to free up space.

Note: If on a budget, you can get the 2 TB one for $99.00 or less. I have 3 2TB ones. One for recording, one for backing up content, and another for storage. I bought those before they had the 4 and 6 TB versions out.
