For those who have Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro

What was your main reason in upgrading to a more robust movie editor?

Meaning, what feature were you missing from more basic programs like Imovie, Premiere Elements, or Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

Well I am a film/video editor by trade. So I have a Premiere, Final Cut, and an AVID at my house. I have to have them because different clients come with different expectations and for what I do (not on youtube) The Basics wouldn't cut it.

Because it had more power to do what I wanted, more settings and I had more over all control.

Please tell me FC is only used on smallish budget things these days

Well people still use Final Cut 7... I don't know any production houses that use Final Cut X.. I know a bunch the switched to Premiere and Avid when Apple made the bonehead decision to go to X.

Good good. Very glad my college went from Final Cut > Premiere.. Maybe one day they'd go Avid!

Premiere is great.. My suggestion to you is that once you graduate.. find a place that teaches AVID. There are courses that are a week long that are made for people who already use Premiere. You can take one of those and then if you freelance anywhere you can say I am trained on Premiere and AVID.. that will get you in many a door.

The reason I got Premiere Pro is because I could not layer anything in Windows Movie Maker. I wanted to be able to add other videos or stills over my vlog videos, so people could see me, and what I was talking about at the same time, instead of splicing them together.

I got Sony Vegas because I felt very limited with the basic ones. I couldn't make my own transitions, and all the preset ones were crap. I also wanted to make my own intro, not easy in the basic ones either. I needed several layers, and I generally wanted much more room for improvement and options.
I've now switched to Adobe for stability reasons. Also because of after effects.

I used to use iMovie but I felt limited. I couldnt even add more then 1 PIP and I wanted to add more effects etc.
The move to FCPX was the best thing I ever did in my 'YouTube career'.

I'll most probably do that! I'll try and specialise in another field and have editing as a fallback in case it does not work out ^^.
